II One Health PhD Forum

We are delighted to announce the II One Health PhD Forum. This meeting brings together students, researchers, and academics dedicated to advancing knowledge and fostering partnerships in the field of environmental, animal, and human health.

The event will take place on 12 June 2025, at the Salão Nobre of ICBAS-UP. This is a one-day scientific meeting aimed at all students enrolled in Doctoral Programs at ICBAS. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work in the One Health field in their preferred format: oral presentation or poster. The best presentations in both categories will be awarded a travel grant.

The II One Health PhD Forum will be a unique opportunity to share scientific knowledge from a One Health perspective. The program will also feature a keynote lecture on a topic of general interest.

Registration and Important Dates

Registration is free but mandatory, and it includes lunch and coffee breaks. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

One Health Office of ICBAS presents book in Seia

The One Health Office of the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto presented, on 8 April at the Casa da Cultura in Seia, the book One Health , a contribution from the UniversityThe initiative took place at the invitation of the Seia Municipal Library and marked the conclusion of the programme of events celebrating World Health Day, organised by the Municipal Council.

During the session, the One Health approach was highlighted as a key strategy for addressing current health challenges. Excerpts from the book were read to illustrate the contribution of ICBAS lecturers and researchers to the development of an integrated and sustainable vision of health, linking the human, animal, and environmental dimensions.

The book presented is the result of a collective effort by the academic community of ICBAS and reflects the institution’s commitment to promoting knowledge and raising public awareness of the importance of this holistic and transdisciplinary approach.

ICBAS raises awareness among young students about the importance of water.

A group of students from Marco Primary School in Vila Nova de Gaia recently visited the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto for an activity focused on the importance of water. This activity was part of the educational project “One Health in Schools” promoted by the ICBAS One Health Office.

The initiative included a visit to the ICBAS Aquatic Organisms Facility and the Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecology, microscopic analysis of planktonic organisms found in water, and a visit to the Crystal Palace Gardens to observe aquatic ecosystems and biological indicators of environmental quality.

One Health Talks

A próxima Conversa One Health terá como tema Doenças neurodegenerativas – pode a abordagem One Health ajudar? Esta sessão contará com a participação de Ricardo Taipa (ULSSA, ICBAS, UMIB, ITR) e de Carolina Lemos (ICBAS, UMIB, ITR), que partilharão as suas perspetivas sobre os desafios e implicações das doenças neurodegenerativas.

Para tornar a conversa ainda mais acolhedora, oferecemos o café. Convidamos todos a trazer a sua chávena, em alinhamento com o conceito One Health e a nossa preocupação com a saúde do ambiente.

Doenças neurodegenerativas – pode a abordagem One Health ajudar? | É possível prevenir as doenças neurodegenerativas? Como uma abordagem holística da saúde pode reduzir o risco? Estilos de vida saudáveis, como alimentação equilibrada, exercício físico regular, estimulação mental e gestão do stress, são essenciais para a saúde cerebral. Além disso, será que os cuidados preventivos, como acompanhamento médico regular e gestão de condições como hipertensão e diabetes, podem minimizar os fatores de risco? Qual o papel da investigação no que diz respeito ao estudo destas doenças? Existem modificadores genéticos que possam alterar o curso destas patologias? Estas questões serão abordadas na próxima Conversa One Health, participe e partilhe as suas dúvidas.

ICBAS supports the integration of One Health into the Municipal Health Plan of Gaia.

At the invitation of the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council, the Director of the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto, Henrique Cyrne Carvalho, attended the opening of the 1st Conference “Integrating Policies to Promote Health”, which took place on 26 March at the Gaia Biological Park.

In his speech, the Director of ICBAS highlighted the importance of integrating the One Health concept into formulating and implementing the new Health Plan for the municipality.
