The ICBAS , since its foundation in 1975, has considered itself as a multidisciplinary institution in Life Sciences.
The school occupies a unique space in Portugal, integrating the three base areas of One Health (human, animal and environmental health), both in terms of teaching and research.
The vision of ICBAS is to place One Health central to its activity. With this perspective, ICBAS adopted the motto “One School, One Health”, seeking to mobilize the community for the promotion of synergies and complementarities between various areas of knowledge, both in research and in high-level training.
Our mission is to train students with a holistic perspective across the human, animal, and environmental sectors, and to promote interdisciplinary and synergistic research to improve public health for all.
The participation of ICBAS in the following institutes and research units of the U.Porto reinforces its integrative mission:
- Centre for Animal Science Studies (CECA);
- Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO);
- Research Center of the Portuguese Oncology Institute - Porto (CI-IPOP);
- Center for Drug Discovery and Innovative Medicines (MedInUP);
- Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR);
- i3S - Institute for Research and Innovation in Health;
- Institute of Public Health, University of Porto (ISPUP);
- Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (REQUIMTE);
- Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine (UMIB).
ICBAS also collaborates closely with the following hospital structures:
– Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto (fusion of Santo António General Hospital, Specialized Central Hospital for Children Maria Pia, and Júlio Dinis Maternity);
