ICBAS: 18 years researching water quality in Guinea

Research on water quality in Guinea-Bissau and its relationship with public health has been ongoing for 18 years and, after 33 missions, continues because there is still much to be done. Adriano A. Bordalo e Sá, a hydrobiologist, lecturer, and researcher at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto, first travelled to Guinea-Bissau in July 2006, carrying a laboratory in his luggage. The aim was to analyse the quality of the water supplying the population of Bolama Island (a region of Guinea-Bissau in the Bijagós Archipelago) and the surrounding tabancas (villages), following reports of multiple episodes of diarrhoea and gastrointestinal issues at the regional hospital.
